DBDS measuring setup in use on a water infrastructure

Applications from water, construction and infrastructure.

We capture data where standard solutions often fail on power supply, transmission, interfaces or responsibilities.

Construction site monitoring

To monitor groundwater levels, drainage volumes and water quality values on construction sites, our DBDS-x and DBDS-s devices are used. In addition, data points from other platforms are read out via an interface to simplify monitoring for the customer.

The solution used previously consisted of rental devices for capturing the groundwater level, whose data was sent to the manufacturer's platform. The pH value and the flow measurement were transmitted via a Comat relay to Comat's platform. Monitoring the site became confusing, and using two or more platforms made it cumbersome.

With the solution from DB Data Systems, all relevant measured parameters are now prepared and displayed on one platform. Alerting comes from one central place. Managing many platforms and their access per employee is no longer needed, and responsibilities are clarified.

Flow and volume measurement in a spring chamber

Here, neither power nor genuinely usable sunlight for a solar panel was available. The water volume supplied by the three springs still had to be captured and integrated into an existing control system every 15 minutes.

For the volume capture, the customer installed a mechanical DN200 water meter with a pulse module in the structure. The pulses are captured by a DBDS-x, and the current meter reading is transmitted to the DBDS Datacenter every 15 minutes.

So that the data reaches the plant's control system, our in-house control-system coupler is used. The flow values and the meter reading are handed over as digital and analogue signals (4-20 mA). Because conventional control technology is used, there is also no risk in the IT/OT area.

If required, capturing bidirectional signals (water flow forwards/backwards) for measuring shafts in the water network is also possible, shown in the gallery as a trend from another application.

Water temperature measurement

The dimensioning of water pipes in industrial areas is based on the required amount of firefighting water. However, the effective flow is often low relative to the pipe dimension, since not every industrial sector needs large volumes of water.

If district heating pipes then also fall below the minimum distance to the water pipes, the temperature of the almost standing water can rise sharply.

To monitor the effective water temperatures, a DBDS-x with a digital temperature sensor and a magnetic mounting fixture was used here. To prevent corrosion of the water pipe, care was taken that no metals touch the water pipe. A spring presses the temperature sensor onto the pipe with a defined force, while the magnet provides the necessary holding force.

The entire installation is housed in a standard roadside cabinet. Thanks to IoT-specific LTE technologies, smooth data transmission is ensured.

Temporary turbidity measurement

For a water utility, turbidity is to be measured in a spring chamber just before the pumping station for three months, in order to define the quality assurance measures needed in future.

Thanks to the DBDS-x used, with its strong 24 VDC supply and large battery capacity, the turbidity measurement can deliver data every 15 minutes for around half a year. Despite a massive steel cover, the data is transmitted to the DBDS Datacenter over the LTE network without an antenna extension.

Soil temperature measurement

Soil temperature measurement of road and pavement surfaces for winter road maintenance. Winter road maintenance is deployed on the basis of the actually measured soil temperature, so that personnel and material resources are not used unnecessarily.

The solution is particularly suitable for municipalities with different temperature zones or critical neighbourhoods. The unit is easy to mount and protected against vandalism by its rugged construction. The battery runtime is unlimited thanks to the integrated solar panel.
